Introduction to Vastu Shastra
Vastu Shastra has references in Yajur Veda, one of the four main vedas in ancient India. Thus, the science of vastu has existed for more than 3000 years. A section of the Yajur Veda called Sthapatha Vidya or the art of building deals with the selection of land and the construction of buildings.
In Sanskrit, 'Vastu' means a place of dwelling or business. 'Shastra' simply means science. Vastu Shastra therefore simply means the science of building residential and commercial places.
It is important to remember the distinction between Vastu Shastra and architecture. An architect builds homes / commercial spaces making maximum utilization of space in an aesthetic manner; a vastu consultant advises construction that makes maximum utilization of natural energy flow. An architect can build a lavish home but cannot guarantee happiness of the people living in it. A vastu consultant on the other hand can ensure that the effect of negative vibes is minimized.
Vastu Shastra is an ancient Indian tradition. It is based on the principle that the world is created by the five elements of earth, fire, air, wind air, water and space. To ensure happiness, human beings must utilize these elements in harmony. If they lead a life in accordance with the laws of nature, then they will live a healthy life. Vastu Shastra therefore advocates living in harmony with these five elements. Ancient Indians were aware that the earth is tilted at an axis of 23.5%, and that it spins from West to East around the Sun. Therefore, Vastu Shastra also gives importance to directions.
Vastu Shastra starts with plot selection. Be it a residential place or a commercial complex, Vastu Shastra considers the selection of plots a very important decision. The size and shape of the plot matters a lot. Vastu Shastra also considers the direction to the entrance of the plot and the location of various rooms in the house / commercial place as important.
Vastu Shstra was almost forgotten till the latter part of the 20th century. During this time there was tremendous improvement in the technology and building material of construction. Rather than concentrate on the vastu, emphasis was on amenities and comfort. It was only in the 80's that Vastu Shastra began to gain importance again, based on individual experiences.
